"We call over 4,000 students for counselling in Anna University for admissions. Everyday at least there are over 1,000 absentees. Students do not want to join engineering as before," Higher Education Minister P Palaniappan told the state Assembly.
Replying a query during the question hour, he said there were 1,82,487 seats allotted for the government and another 28,868 seats, which the self supporting colleges offered to fill up with candidates selected by the government.
He was replying to CPI legislator M Arumugham (Valparai), who wanted an engineering college in his constituency.
