Over 98,000 people were affected and ten houses along with portions of a school have been washed away by the erosion triggered by the last wave of floods in September, official sources said.
Erosion by Sarikuria, a tributary of Brahmaputra river, was posing a threat to the existence of Dhankuwakhana subdivision following the destruction of the protection dyke by the deluge, they said.
Hundred metres of one building and 80 feet of another building of Government Dhakuwakhana Collegiate High School in Dhakuwakhana town were washed away due to erosion by the river which is now flowing through the play field of the school.
The house of a teacher near the school was also swallowed by the river forcing him to take shelter in the school.
The people said with government measures yet to be taken for repair and protection of the school, the locals had contributed money towards its survival.
The erosion started last month after the floods receded submerging eight houses and threatening the property of 100 families in Nabakathoni area, the sources said.
Part of state-run Assam State Transport Corporation bus station along with a house was ravaged in the erosion by Sarikuria river, which has also eaten away a major portion of historical Phat Bihu field and is close to FRL Government Hospital. MORE
