The Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS) or Endo-ultrasonography is a medical procedure in which endoscopy is combined with high resolution ultrasound to obtain images of the internal organs better than CT and MRI, claimed Dr Shyam Varadarajulu, a top EUS expert and researcher.
"Diseases deep inside the chest and abdomen are diagnosed very accurately by this EUS technology. Tissue sample or biopsy obtained from deep structures very safely leading to correct diagnosis of cancers and other diseases. It also helps staging different cancers for proper treatment," he told reporters at a press conference here.
Highlighting the new technology, Varadarajulu said the greatest advantage of this advanced technology is to perform different blood less surgeries inside the chest and abdomen extremely safely and patients are discharged the same day.
It helps to provide palliative treatment for very advanced cancers, thus improving the quality of life, he said adding that this technology is one of the great discovery in the field of intervention Gastroenterology, extremely accurate in diagnosing and treating diseases.
Varadarajulu, an Indian-American, is the Medical Director for Interventional Endoscopy at the Florida Hospital, Orlando, USA. He is also Professor of Medicine at the University of Central Florida.
"Now with EUS we can actually see the root cause of diseases and hence treatment is much more accurate," he said adding "experts were looking to develop Endoscopic ET scans and MRI scans too. The reason is, EUS is very accurate and specific."
A group of doctors drawn from different parts of the country are being trained in the latest Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS) technology by Dr Varadarajulu here.
"We are extremely fortunate to have Dr Varadarajulu with us at Bhubaneswar for this workshop. It is a great opportunity for others to learn from such a stalwart expert," said Dr Manoj Kumar Sahu, Head of the department of Gastroenterology at IMS and SUM Hospital.
