Ex-customs official, wife get a year in jail in DA case

: A former Customs and Central Excise official and his wife were sentenced here today to one year in jail and imposed a fine of Rs five lakh by a CBI court for possessing assets disproportionate to their income.
Customs and Central Excise Superintendent A C Thomas of the Customs Preventive Division and his wife Thressia were convicted and sentenced to one-year rigorous imprisonment each and were imposed a total fine of Rs five lakh for the offence punishable under various sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.
The verdict was given by CBI Special Judge B Kalam Pasha.

According to the prosecution, Thomas while functioning as Customs and Central Excise inspector between 1997 and 2001, had acquired disproportionate assets to the tune of Rs 8.85 lakh.
The anti-corruption wing of the CBI, which investigated the case, alleged Thressia abetted her husband Thomas in acquisition of assets by purchasing properties in her name.
