Expedite setting up of waste processing plant: L-G to SDMC

Lt Governor Anil Baijal today inspected a modern garbage collection station at New Friends Colony and a landfill site at Okhla in south Delhi and directed the area's civic body to expedite establishment of a waste-processing plant as a "showcase" project.
He inspected the Fixed Compactor Transfer Station (FCTS), which have replaced the earlier system of dhalao (dump) for solid waste management.
"For tackling the ever increasing problem of waste management in Delhi, the L-G directed Commissioner of SDMC P K Goel to expedite establishment of waste processing facilities and assured that DDA shall make land available for the purpose," a statement from the Raj Niwas said.

Baijal also said more such scientific projects for solid waste management are needed in Delhi.
Goel said SDMC is contemplating setting up a waste-to-energy plant of 3,600 metric ton per day capacity.
The South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) in a statement said, "The DDA shall allot 50 acres of land to SDMC. The L-G has directed that the plant/waste processing facility should be a 'showcase' project of the country."

It said, a total of 15 FCTS have been installed or are under process of installation in SDMC's Central Zone.
Baijal also directed that one FCTS be installed in each ward of the corporation, the SDMC said.

"FCTS will be installed in South and West Zones of SDMC in the next three months. In Nazafgarh Zone, installation of FCTS shall be taken up subsequently," it said.
"FCTS cater to large areas resulting in lesser number of dhalaos. About five to seven trips of trucks carrying garbage from FCTS to the waste-to-energy plant per day result in non-accumulation of garbage at the dhalao. FCTS has lead to non-mixing of silt and other type of waste with garbage," the SDMC said.
Baijal also inspected the waste-to-energy plant at Okhla and thereafter the landfill site in the area. He also inaugurated newly-procured heavy-duty bulldozers and excavators for managing the landfill site.
