Following the decision, each of the eleven family courts in Delhi will be headed by a principal judge. Currently, there is only one principal judge who is administrative head of all the family courts.
The decision to have one principal judge as head of each of the family court was taken at a cabinet meeting presided over by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit. The government in December last year had decided increase the number of family courts from 9 to 11.
The number of districts in Delhi was increased from nine to 11 last year and government had decided to make available one family court in each district.
The family courts were set up to encourage conciliation between the estranged family members and take away family and marital disputes from the traditional courts.
