Leaders of the Federation of Central Universities Association (FEDCUTA) have warned Aligarh Muslim University authorities of a country-wide protest if they fail to restore the "democratic rights" of teachers.
Addressing a gathering of teachers and employees at the AMU Teachers club yesterday, FEDCUTA President Professor Nandita Narain alleged that the suspension of AMUTA Secretary Mustafa Zaidi was "illegal" and symptomatic of the "dictatorial" approach of the AMU Vice Chancellor.
She alleged that AMU teachers were being harassed because they were raising their voice against irregularities in admissions and appointments, and the deteriorating law and order at campus.
Narain said the real challenge faced by all higher education institutions in the country was "corporatisation and commodification" of the education system.
She said if the nation does not wake up to the threat to higher education posed by the intervention and dictates by foreign bodies like International Monetary Fund, World Bank and WTO then it will lead to irreparable damage to the country's educational system, she said.
