Five naxals surrender before police in Chhattisgarh

Five naxals, three of them carrying cash rewards on their heads, surrendered in Chhattisgarh's Bastar division on Thursday, police said.

Sannu Kunjam (28) and Budhram Mandavi (20) turned themselves in in Dantewada district, while Mehattar Korram (35) surrendered in Narayanpur district, a senior police official said.

Sonaru Poyam and his wife Manju Mandavi surrendered before Inspector General of Police (Bastar range) Vivekanand Sinha in Jagdalpur, the headquarters of Bastar district, he said.

Kunjam, a maoist Jan-milita commander, and Budhram Mandavi, a member of DAKMS (Dandkaranya Adivasi Kisan Majdoor Sanghthan- a Maoist front) were carrying a reward of Rs 1 lakh each on their heads, he said.

The two were active in Gangloor area in neighbouring Bijapur district and were wanted for attacks on police teams, planting IEDs and other incidents, he said.

Korram alias Ronda, a hard-core naxal who was active as head of Jantana Sarkar group under Bayanar area committee of Maoists, was carrying a reward of Rs 5 lakh on his head.

He surrendered with a .12 bore gun before Narayanpur SP Mohit Garg, Commandant of Border Security Force (BSF) 193rd battalion Rajeev Kumar and other senior police and BSF officials, the offcial said.

He was involved in around dozen attacks on security forces in the area, he added.

Sonaru Poyam and his wife Manju Mandavi were active as area committee members in neighbouring Odisha.
