Five of family sentenced to life imprisonment for killing kin

A court in Chhattisgarh's Raigarh district has sentenced five members of a family, including two women, to life imprisonment for killing a 36-year-old man last year.

Additional District and Session Judge Geeta Neware yesterday convicted Premsai Paikra (52), his wife Butibai (50), his son Bhole (21), his younger brother Sumant (47) and Sumant's wife Ratanwati (40) for killing Banau Paikra, said Additional Government Pleader (AGP) Anil Shrivastav.

He informed that Paikra, who was a nephew of Premsai, was killed on July 10 last year in Indiranagar area, which comes under the jurisdiction of Lailunga police station.

The court also imposed a fine of Rs 500 on each of the accused, Shrivastav said, adding that if they failed to pay the fine, they will have to undergo an additional 15 months imprisonment.

"On July 10, 2017, the victim had an argument with his wife Ghumet over purchasing a pair of bulls. The accused intervened and the victim was beaten to death during the course of the argument," he said.

Acting on a complaint filed by the victim's wife, police had registered a case under section 147 (punishment for rioting), 148 (rioting, armed with deadly weapon), 149 (unlawful assembly), 294 (obscene act), 506 B (criminal intimidation), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) and 302 (murder) of the IPC against the accused, he added.
