The policemen had gone to the shop following information that a scuffle was taking place at the site last evening.
As the police reached the spot, the group pelted stones at them and hit them with sticks leaving an Assistant Sub Inspector and three others injured. Two others also received mild injuries in the incident.
"There is a dispute between the liquor shop owner and some locals in Aaskanda village who have been protesting against the shop. Last evening, when the liquor cartons were being off loaded from a pick-up van, the accused came and tried to rob the liquor and thrashed the shop owner and his brothers," DSP Bansilal Swami said.
