Popular actress-dancer of North East Madhurima Choudhury feels a folk artist soften don't get the respect he or she deserves.
Madhurima says she can sense a huge difference when she is invited as an actress but folk artists are generally neglected.
"A folk artist doesn't get the respect he or she deserves. The dancers too don't get enough respect. When I am invited as an actress, the treatment is different," Madhurima told PTI.
"When I go as a dancer, especially, with folk dancers, the situation isn't the same. I feel very sad. Folk dance is extremely important, various dance forms come from it. It is the root," she added.
The actress feels several dance reality shows on TV can bring about awareness regarding traditional North Eastern dance and culture.
"Reality shows can definitely help. They should show a lot (of traditional dance). North East has such a rich culture that they should focus more on it. It should come on a big platform. Otherwise it (the treatment) feels like step-motherly."
Madhurima was speaking at the 3rd edition of "Colours of North East", a festival organised by Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) and Assam's socio-cultural trust Trend MMS.
"I am feeling very glad and proud to be a part of this. The platform is huge and there will be awareness about North East and its culture. I felt good that looking at the performances, people will get some new knowledge about the region.
