A man, wanted in cases of cheating and preparing fake certificates and against whom non-bailable warrant has been pending for the past 17 years, was arrested from Mumbai, Telangana police said today.
The NBW was pending against 47-year-old Abdul Basith, who was involved in a case of making fake certificates for intermediate, nursing and other related courses, police said.
Subsequently, a case was registered by CID against Basith on charges of 468 (forgery for purpose of cheating) and 471 (using as genuine a forged document or electronic record) and for cheating of IPC.
"These certificates were submitted to appointing authority for getting jobs. During inquiry it was found that they were fake," said a release by Telangana CID.
The case was investigated by CID which arrested him.
However, Basith jumped the bail in 1997 and since then the NBW was pending against him.
A Look out Circular (LOC) was issued against him and efforts were made to trace him since many years, police said.
On February 14, while Basith tried to travel to Bangkok from international airport in Mumbai by a Thai Airlines flight holding Australian Passport, he was intercepted by the Immigration authorities when he presented his passport at the Immigration Counter for clearance, as his name was in LOC list, it said.
"Basith was taken into custody along with his original Australian passport. As he is an accused in a case probed by CID Telangana, he was handed over to local police in Mumbai and the Immigration authorities intimated to Telangana Police.
"A team of CID Telangana proceeded to Mumbai and took over Basith into custody on February 16," as per the release.
Basith was produced before a court in Mumbai and later produced before a court here which sent him to judicial custody, it added.
