Four men were tied up and burnt alive by villagers who suspected them to be cattlelifters in the early hours today in West Bengal's Jalpaiguri district.
Police said the brutal incident took place between 3 AM and 4 am at Balaram area of Ambari, near the Indo-Bangla border.
A large contingent of police have rushed to the area and investigations into the incident have been launched.
No arrest has been made so far, the police said.
The bodies were charred beyond recognition.
The problem of cattle lifting is rampant in the border area and villagers had in the past complained about it.
