Four officials of Engine Factory sentenced to one year RI

A CBI court today sentenced four officials of Engine Factory, Avadi, including its former Joint General Manager, to one year rigorous imprisonment in a cheating case.
Judge K Paramaraj also imposed a fine of Rs 2,000 on them.
Based on the allegations, the anti-corruption bureau of CBI had registered a case in 2006 against R Mariappan, then Junior Works Manager at the factory, and Hashim Shamshuddin, Managing Parter of M/s Trisure Enterprises, Chennai, a CBI release said.
They had allegedly entered into criminal conspiracy in 2004 to cheat the government firm in procuring 'Mather and Platt-make pumps' for use in Paharapur Cooling Tower in its Engine Test House, the release said.

Investigations revealed the involvement of B S Masure, Joint General Manager, and J Shanmugam, Assistant Foreman in the conspiracy, it said.
Further probe brought to light that in 2004, Shanmugam prepared a requisition for procurement, which was submitted by Mariappan for purchasing three Mather and Platt-make centrifugal pumps from M/s Trisure Enterprises despite knowing that it was not an authorised dealer.

Masure had recommended the proposal for approval. It was approved based on his recommendations, it said.
Pursuant to the conspiracy, Shamshuddin fraudulently supplied the pumps at an exorbitant rate, which were in fact purchased by him from M/s Siddharth Electricals, Chennai, an authorised dealer, the release said.

Material worth Rs 1,99,923 was purchased by Shamshuddin from Siddharth Electricals and it was supplied to Engine Factory for Rs 9,57,722, the probe revealed.
CBI framed the charge-sheet against the accused under various IPC sections and Prevention of Corruption Act 1988.
