"Every year we observe this day to commemorate one of the important events in the history of the state and the Union of India when on October 26, 1947, Maharaja of the state, Maharaja Hari Singh, signed the Instrument of Accession with the Union of India," Jammu and Kashmir Deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh said during a function here.
The state unit of the BJP also observed the day and paid floral tributes to Maharaja and hailed his decision of signing the Instrument of Accession.
"Brigadier Rajendra Singh laid down his life while repulsing the tribal invasion which was aided by the regulars of the Pakistan Army. We commemorate this day in the memory of brave soldiers of Maharaja's Army who laid down their lives for the state of Jammu and Kashmir," Major General Goverdhan Singh Jamwal (retired) said.
Various other political and student organisations also observed the day and paid floral tributes at the statue of Maharaja Hari Singh.
