Gang involved in blackmailing rich people, busted

Five members of a gang, including a woman, which used to befriend rich people and demand money threatening to register false rape cases against them, have been arrested, police said.
A complaint was filed yesterday, following which the members of the gang -- a woman and four men were arrested today, police said.
Rs 5.70 lakh cash, a revolver, live cartridges, some important documents, and a fake police identity card were recovered from them, they said.
During the investigation, it was found that the gang had many women members. The gang used to allegedly trap rich people in and around Kurukshetra and Kaithal into friendship.
Later, they demanded lakhs of rupees as ransom in lieu of not registering false rape case against them, police said.
Police said that a Kaithal-resident registered a case against a woman at Sadar Police Station yesterday for allegedly blackmailing by falsely trapping people.
Using their modus operandi the gang had extracted Rs 25.50 lakh from people and were demanding Rs 35 lakh more from others who they were blackmailing.
Acting on the complaint, a police team arrested the woman from Kurukshetra last night.
During investigation, she revealed the names of other members of the gang.
The police later arrested head of the gang Virender Kumar, Satish Kumar and two others - Jaswinder Singh and Jagdeep Singh - from GT Road here.
The police recovered Rs 1.30 lakh from the woman, Rs 3.10 lakh from Virender, Rs 40,000 from Satish, and Rs 90,000 from Jaswinder Singh.
Further investigations revealed that the gang had also committed such crimes in Jyotisar and Kaithal and got heavy ransom amount. The police are on the look out for others linked with the gang.
