Meerut Divisional Commissioner Prabhat Kumar today visited Ghaziabad without prior intimation and reviewed with district officials the progress in efforts to clean the Hindon river, one of the main tributaries of the Yamuna.
Kumar, during the meeting, said the heads of village situated near the Hindon river should be urged to plant saplings along the banks of the river to revive and rejuvenate the polluted water body, district administration sources said.
District Magistrate and Ghaziabad Development Authority Vice Chairperson Ritu Maheswari said a bank account has been opened in the name of 'Nirmal Hindon Kosh' and the GDA has contributed Rs 5 crore to the fund.
The Meerut Development Authority has contributed Rs 1 crore to the fund.
Maheswari informed Kumar that nearly 300 factories have been sealed for polluting the ground-water and the river.
Kumar said the administration will urge the Uttar Pradesh government and industrial houses to contribute to the fund.
