Germany today offered financial assistance of Rs 25 lakh to a hospital in Baramulla to help flood-affected people in Kashmir.
"To show solidarity with those suffering in Kashmir, we looked into the embassy funds and we will send Rs 25 lakh for basic healthcare today," German ambassador Michael Steiner said on the sidelines of an event.
These funds will go to a hospital in Baramulla.
"We have a partner hospital in Baramulla where we have already sent cars, buses and medicines. We have doctors there for quite sometime," the ambassador said.
He said that a cultural programme in Jammu and Kashmir featuring a performance by renowned international conductor Zubin Mehta organised by the Embassy last year led to the creation of "long-standing, sustainable" relations with the state.
"With the Kashmir concert, we have established really long-standing sustainable relations with Kashmir. But now, with this catastrophic flood, I think we need to do the extra thing and this is what we did today," he said.
The floods have unleashed unprecedented destruction in Jammu and Kashmir with the death toll reaching around 200.
About four lakh people are still stranded and desperate for help in the Valley. The government has put in place a massive multi-agency rescue and relief operation in which nearly 43,000 people have so far been safely evacuated.
