DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi today demanded that Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa work expeditiously and obtain an injunction from the Supreme Court immediately againstconstruction of check dams by Andhra Pradesh across the Palar river.
"Under the present circumstances, Tamil Nadu government andChief Minister Jayalalithaa should work expeditiously and get an injunctionagainst construction works of Andhra Pradesh," he said in a statement while making a reference to the alleged initiative to build a check dam and to increase theheight of the existing one by Andhra Pradesh government.
On July 18, the Tamil Nadu government had moved the Supreme Courtto restrain Andhra Pradesh from constructing check dams or raising theheight of present check dams across Palar river.
Referring to the case filed by Tamil Nadu, he said,"It will not suffice if onlya case was filed against Andhra Pradesh. It should be realised that if an injunction isnot obtained in the case immediately, that government will completethe construction of check dams."
Earlier this month, Jayalalithaa had strongly protested over Andhra Pradesh raising the height of a check dam from five to12 feet at Perumballam.
She had written to her Andhra Pradesh counterpart Chandrababu Naiduurging him to bring down the check dam's height toits original 12 feet and not to store additional water in it.
