Girl identifies rapist from voter list

The recent marathon drive by district administration to include more persons in the voter list proved helpful for police in tracing alleged rapists as a victim identified one of the culprits from the voter list.
The girl was allegedly gang-raped by six persons on July 29 when she went to a school to meet a friend in Sadar Bazar area here.
Police today carried out an identification parade, however, the accused were not among them.
This led police to try an innovative method and they took out the voter list of the area and asked the girl to go through it.

The girl identified one of the accused from his picture and he was arrested today, a senior police officer said.
Later, the police interrogated him and nabbed four other accused on the information provided by him, he said.

"When the trick of parading over two dozen youth in front of the woman for identification parade became futile, the voter lists of adjacent four colonies were presented before the girl.
"She identified one voter out of the list. After the arrest of the youth other four youth involved in this case were also nabbed," Deputy Superintendent of Police Anil Yadav said.

The police team got a reward from the state police for speedy action.
"Appreciating the speedy action of the police, DG (Police), UP, Anand Lal Benerji and state Principal Secretary (home) Neeraj Gupta have announced a reward of Rs 25,000 for the police party," SSP Nitin Tewari told reporters today.
