University officials said that confirmation of the award reached them through a memorandum from the Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.
The award comes with a replica of the trophy and a cash prize of Rs 10,00,000.
President Pranab Kumar Mukherjee would hand over the trophy to GNDU Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ajaib Singh Brar, and the varsity's deputy director of sports, Dr HS Randhawa, at a ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhawan on August 31.
The Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Trophy was instituted in 1956-57 as a running trophy by the Union Ministry of Education. It is awarded each year to the varsity which has put in the best all-round performance at university, national and international-level sports meets.
