Goa forest department is relying on technology as well as traditional methods to trace a bison which allegedly gored a farmer to death in the area lying between Bondla and Bhagwan Mahavir wildlife sanctuaries.
Vigilance cameras have been set up across the forest around Shivdem village in Dharbandora tehsil, South Goa.
A 'gaur' (Indian bison) reportedly killed Yeno Solienkar (51), a farmer from the village, on March 31.
"Search is going on round-the-clock in and around Shivdem village. We tried tracing bison movement in the area through cameras but could not find any," a senior official said.
Forest officials are also using an elephant from Bondla sanctuary to comb the area.
This is the first time the forest department is using 'elephant-mounted human surveillance' in such an operation.
Gaur is Goa's state animal and is also protected under the Wildlife Protection Act.
Panic spread in Shivdem village after Solienkar was found dead, apparently gored by bison.
However, round-the-clock monitoring by forest officials hasn't led to spotting of a single bison in the area.
"Usually bison move in a herd but this one is alone. After spotting it, if it is found to be wounded, we will tranquilise it and treat it," the official said.
