Gold-plated dome of the goddess Ekvira Devi temple near Karla Caves in Pune district, 110 km from here, was stolen by unidentified persons last night, police said.
The temple draws thousands of devotees from across Maharashtra every year. The goddess is the 'family deity' of late Shiv Sena founder Bal Thackeray's family.
Lonavala rural police said the incident came to light at around 7 am today after some villagers noticed that the dome was missing.
"As per the temple trustees, the gold-plated dome, made of a five-metal alloy, had been donated by a devotee," said a police officer.
The temple has CCTV cameras and police were checking their footage, he added.
Temple trustees have registered a case of theft.
