The film that sees Gosling team up with director Nicolas Winding Refn after their earlier collaboration 'Drive' premiered at the festival yesterday but Cannes audience did not warm to the story of a revenging brother, played by Gosling.
The screening witnessed jeers and walkouts by the audience during its most violent scenes that included mutilation and torture scenes.
The Hollywood heartthrob was conspicuous by his absence from the red carpet, depriving the film of the much needed star support.
Gosling sent a letter explaining that he missed the premiere as he was was busy with his directorial debut 'How to Catch a Monster'.
The film is set for a July 19 release in the US. The story follows Gosling as Julian, who is forced by his mother to track down and kill the person responsible for his brother's death.
