Governor constitutionally obliged to invite Cong-JDS: Sibal

Senior Congress leader Kapil Sibal today said that Karnataka Governor Vajubhai Vala was "constitutionally obliged" to invite the Congress-Janata Dal (Secular) post-poll alliance to form the government in the state.

Sibal, also a senior advocate, said that Governor has "no choice" but to invite them to form the government.

"The Governor is constitutionally obliged to invite the Congress-Janata Dal (Secular) combine. There is no choice with the Governor, but to invite us to form the government," Sibal told PTI.

Earlier in the day, JD(S) and Congress leaders had met the Governor in Bengaluru and submitted a list claiming support of 117 MLAs with a plea to consider their claim for government formation.

The delegation led by JD(S) state unit chief H D Kumaraswamy and KPCC president G Parameshwara met the Governor after both the parties held their respective legislature party meetings.

In the May 12 polls, BJP emerged as the single largest party with 104 members, while Congress secured 78, the JD(S) 37 and others three.
