The Maharashtra government today allowed the city police to set up 'Mumbai Police Foundation', which would be able to accept donations from private firms as part of the corporate social responsibility (CSR) spend.
The state home department issued a government resolution (GR) in this regard today.
While private organisations are willing to contribute for police welfare under their CSR activities, there was no channel through which voluntary donations could be accepted, a senior police official said.
After studying donation policies of police forces across the world, the Mumbai police had asked the government for a permission to establish Mumbai Police Foundation.
While giving nod to the proposal, the government has stipulated that there should be no conflict of interest or 'perception' of conflict of interest while accepting money for the Foundation, the official said.
Donations shall be accepted only from persons or organisations with "high credibility", the home department has specified. Acceptance of donations should not compromise the police force's duties, it has said.
The draft of the Foundation's trust deed and other documents would be vetted by the law and judiciary department before an application is made to the office of charity commissioner for registration.
