An inquiry has been ordered into a sting CD purportedly showing Uttarakhand Power Corporation Limited (UPCL) MD S S Yadav picking up a wad of currency notes from his table.
Uttarakhand Chief Secretary Shatrughna Singh has asked the Power Secretary to look into the case, official sources said.
Also, ruling Congress has asked Chief Minister Harish Rawat to send the top UPCL official on forced leave till his name is cleared in the case.
In a letter to Rawat, Uttarakhand Pradesh Congress Committee president Kishore Upadhyay said the sting CD had brought the name of the state into disrepute and so UPCL MD should be sent on forced leave till his name is cleared in the case.
State BJP had recently accused Yadav of awarding contracts worth over Rs 60 crore to his relatives.
"If stern action is not taken in such cases it will tarnish the image not only of the state government but also that of Congress party," Upadhyay said in his letter yesterday.
Meanwhile, BJP welcomed the Chief Secretary's decision to launch an inquiry into the case, but cast doubts on the neutrality of the probe as the Power Secretary is part of the Board of Directors of the corporation.
"While we welcome the decision to have the sting CD against the UPCL MD probed we doubt if the power secretary can be neutral in his investigation as he is himself a prominent member of the UPCL board of Directors," Pradesh BJP spokesman Binary Goel said.
