Govt proposes to add super-specialist block to RML hospital

Replying to a question in the Rajya Sabha today, Minister for Health and Family Welfare Ghulam Nabi Azad said the major provisions of the proposal include construction of blocks to house six super specialities, addition of 420 beds and construction of eight more operations theatres.

The Minister said fund requirement for the expansion project has been put before the Planning Commission and the completion period of the same has been fixed as 18 months.

In reply to another question about shortage of super specialist doctors and para medical staff in all hospitals of central government, the Minister admitted there was such a in the 3 central government hospitals in Delhi--R M L Hospital, Safdarjung Hospital and Lady Hardinge Medical College and its associated hospitals.

In response to yet another question on whether establishment of AIIMS-like institutions in Tamil Nadu is under consideration, the Minister said there was no such proposal.

He, however, said the government has taken up upgradation of two Government Medical College institutions Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College, Salem, in the first phase and Government Medical College, Madurai, in the second phase of Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY).
