CPI today said the Centre's announcement of implementing 'One Rank, One Pension' (OROP) scheme for ex-servicemen, including those who took premature retirement, is "nothing but a victory of retired armed forces personnel".
"It is comparatively better that Prime Minister (Narendra Modi) said OROP will be applicable even for those who took voluntary retirement. This was one of the main problems.
"... Ultimately, it is the victory of retired employees and people who fought for justified pension," CPI General Secretary S Sudhakar Reddy said.
The party also demanded the Centre to ensure pensions offered to veterans are reviewed every three years, if not two years as demanded by the personnel. Government has declared reassessment of pensions after a gap of every five years.
"Only thing these people (retired personnel) are unhappy about is they want review after every two years, as against Centre's announcement of five years.
"Whenever the pensions are reviewed, it should be done in three years if not two years," Reddy suggested.
The government, responding to the long-standing demand, had on Saturday announced that it has accepted the demand for implementing OROP even as Modi cleared yesterday that the scheme will also be applicable for those who retired prematurely.
