At present, maximum age limit for consideration for induction into three all India services--Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Police Service (IPS) and Indian Forest Service (IFoS)--is 54 years as on January 1, of the year for which the select list is prepared.
Some of the state service officers had challenged the maximum age limit of 54 years before the Supreme Court mainly with the contention that the same should be increased as retirement age in the central government was increased from 58 years to 60 years.
The Supreme Court had vide its order dated August 7, this year had directed that all the petitioners will be at liberty to move appropriate representations to the central government within four weeks from the date of issue of the order and the Centre shall take a call of the matter, and a final decision shall be taken within a further period of four months.
