Seeking to deal with weather exigencies more effectively the India Meteorological Department (IMD), for the first time, will come out with a summer advisory or summer temperature outlook this year, the government today said.
In a written response to a question in Lok Sabha, Minister for Science & Technology and Earth Sciences Harsh Vardhan said the temperature outlook valid for the period April to June will be issued by the end of March. In addition, an extended range forecast (up to 15 days) of summer temperatures with a 5-day update will be issued.
"Mechanism is in place for coordination with various ministries like Agriculture, Home Affairs, Power, Railways, Water Resources, Surface Transport, Health, Sports, Tourism, Coal & Mines and others for addressing any exigencies," Vardhan said.
IMD is responsible for monitoring, detection and forecasting of weather including severe weather events such as cyclones, heavy rainfall and extreme temperature. It provides forecast of these events at national, regional and state levels through its three-tiered structure.
"In order to provide early warning of severe weather events, IMD has setup a network of state meteorological centres to have better coordination with states and other agencies," Vardhan said.
He said to meet the requirement of state governments, IMD officers invariably attend all the meeting called by the state governments for reviewing preparedness for flood situations by various agencies.
