An electric bus will ply on the streets of Delhi tomorrow for the first time on a pilot basis as part of the government's plan to introduce them in the national capital as an eco-freindly transport service.

Delhi Transport Minister Gopal Rai will flag off first electric bus, a move which is aimed at bringing down the rising pollution level in the city.

A senior government official said it is for the first time an e-bus will ferry passengers in Delhi, adding, the transport minister will also unveil the complete plan with reagrd to it in the next couple of days.

"A China-based company has shown interest in runing e-bus in Delhi. The minister will unveil the policy tomorrow," the official said.

The official said in the first phase, one e-bus will be introduced on a trial basis and if the project gets good response, more such buses will be brought in.

The government has planned to run buses on biogas and electricity in the city.

"In the entire world, there is a debate on which fuel should be used to run public transport so that pollution could be brought down.

"Under the pilot project, government is planning to do an experiment to introduce such buses. We are in a consultation with some companies which are working in this field," Rai had recently said.

A plan was earlier also mooted to reintroduce trams in Old Delhi but the proposal was later rejected.
