With low-lying areas flooded with Yamuna water for several days last week, the Delhi government today decided to strengthen a number of embankments and the drainage system in East Delhi.
Delhi Irrigation and Flood Control Minister A K Walia said the Flood Control Board has cleared 27 major proposals amounting to Rs 62 crores with a view to strengthen embankments, drainage system and "access roads" in areas along the Yamuna.
"The Flood Control Board today cleared 27 projects so that low-lying areas are not flooded when the water level in Yamuna goes up," he said
He said Rs 40.25 crore will be spent on construction of access roads and bridges while Rs 11.37 crore has been set aside for strengthening drains and embankment.
Walia said the government will construct 11 bridges on various drains at different locations.
He said four such bridges on Bawana drain will be reconstructed at a cost of Rs.2.56 crores.
Various areas along Yamuna in East Delhi were submerged for several days last week following rise in Yamuna's water level.
