GSPCB chairman Jose Manuel Noronha today said concerns were raised that these transporters might have been dumping the hazardous oil mid-sea, resulting in oil tar balls being flown to the coast during monsoons.
Hazardous oil is generated by a wide range of entities, including personal vehicles.
"The board has issued show cause notices this week to 13 transporters asking them as to why the authorisation (consent to operate) granted under the said rules should not be revoked/ withdrawn in view of the non compliance of the conditions," Noronha said.
Hazardous Waste Rules makes it mandatory for the used oil transporters to submit the copy of the manifest and also file annual returns of the waste collected and disposed off by them.
"It becomes difficult for the board to know where the hazardous waste is generated and disposed off," he added.
According to Noronha, the transporters will now have to take a no objection certificate from the board before ferrying the oil.
