Gujarat government to provide LPG connections to BPL families

Gujarat government plans to make the state "kerosene-free" by providing LPG gas connections to 33 lakh-odd Below Poverty Line (BPL) families, it was officially announced here today.
Confirming the developments, Gujarat Minister of State for Food and Civil Supplies Chhatrasinh Mori said that a proposal has been made in this regard by his department.
"As per our proposal, we wish to make Gujarat a kerosene-free state by providing LPG connections to around 33 lakh BPL famalies, who get their quota of kerosene from fair price shops on their ration card," Mori said.
Under the proposed scheme, the Gujarat government will provide a cooking stove and a domestic LPG connection to each BPL family.

Since the project is in it's initial stage, the Gujarat government is yet to decide on how much this project will cost to the state treasury and how 33 lakh families could be accommodated under this scheme across the state.
The proposed project will be implemented in the city as a pilot project in order to study its feasibility.
"Though we have to plan many things before launching this project, it is not an impossible task. There are many states like Delhi, which have become kerosene-free. We will first launch a pilot project in Ahmedabad in order to examine the feasibility of this project," Mori said.
