After four died and 160 were hospitalised due to jaundice in Saraspur area in the city, Gujarat Chief Secretary D J Pandian along with city Municipal Commissioner D Thara visited the patients and the locality here today.
"To create awareness among people, advertisements should be issued in newspapers and the media. People should be given constant warnings on TV and other media," Chief Secratary D J Pandian told reporters, after visiting the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC)-run Shardaben Hospital in Bapunagar area in the city, where the 160 jaundice-affected patients are being treated.
"There is a need to create awareness among the people. If people are aware, the administration will automatically become aware," Pandian said.
AMC commissioner D Thara said instructions have been issued to people to mix chlorine tablets in their drinking water to prevent jaundice.
The AMC has begun to mend pipelines so that drinking water does not come into contact with drainage water, he said.
According to people in Saraspur area, a 40-year-old drainage line broke and the filth from it got mixed with the adjacent drinking water pipeline, which caused jaundice to as many as 160 people within a week.
