HC asks govt to respond to PIL seeking street decongestion

The Gauhati High Court today directed the Assam government to respond to a PIL on steps taken to decongest city streets and clear the footpaths of vendors to make them free for pedestrians' use.
A division bench of justices Hrishikesh Roy and Nelson Sailo issued notice after hearing a PIL filed by a practising lawyer of the court Rita Das Mazumdar.
The petitioner had alleged inaction on the part of authorities to decongest the city streets and to clear footpaths of vendors to make them free for pedestrian's use.
The PIL was filed contending that non-uniformity of the road width is one of the key factors for traffic snarls and parking of vehicles indiscriminately on both sides of the roads have led to limited use of the road capacity.

The court after hearing the PIL issued notice to all the state respondents and fixed the next date of hearing of the case on January 9.
