HC directs police to continue action against online

Disposing of a PIL seeking action against online prostitution, the Madras High Court today directed police to continue its action on the matter and said it would monitor the same for some time to ensure seriousness was maintained.
The First Bench comprising Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice R Mahadevan gave the direction on a petition by Y Akbar Ahmed seeking action against online prostitution.
After going through the counter-affidavit filed by Assistant Inspector General of Police, V Bhaskaran on the action taken from 2013 to April 30, the bench said, "We are of the view that no further directions are required in the matter except that the concerned authorities should continue to perform their duties in accordance with law."
"But in order to ensure the continued action, we would monitor it for some time to see that the seriousness is maintained", the bench said.
Writ petition is disposed of accordingly, the bench said.
Ahmed submitted that the pornography content displayed online will clearly digress the youths of our country, who are supposed to be a future of our nation.
Due to the growing free sex culture through cyber pornography, strong steps need to be taken to check online porn content, which is having an extremely bad effect on the youth as well the adults leading to various typed of social and medical problems as well as perpetration of crime, submitted.
He contended that, Section 67 of the Information and technology Act, 2000, clearly held that obscene material, pornography on computer or mobile a crime, attracted severe punishment to the producers, distributors and viewers of such sites.
