The Allahabad High Court today dismissed a Public Interest Litigation which alleged that the ex-gratia of Rs 45 lakh given to the victims of the Dadri lynching case was far in excess of the amount laid down in Uttar Pradesh government's compensation policy.
A division bench, comprising Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justice Yashwant Verma, dismissed the PIL filed by one Ritesh Chaudhary who had alleged that the amount of compensation was decided in an "arbitrary" fashion and that the same was in violation of UP Victims Compensation Scheme, 2014.
The court concurred with the contention of the state's Chief Standing Counsel Ramesh Upadhyay that "the petition lacks substantial ground".
On September 28 last, a mob had barged into the house of 52-year-old Akhlaq, at Bisada village in Dadri tehsil of Gautam Buddh Nagar and beat him to death besides brutally assaulting his 21-year-old son Danish.
The mob had alleged that the family of Akhlaq had slaughtered a cow and consumed its meat.
