HC seeks details on number of cases registered against

The Madras High Court bench here today sought details from police on the number of cases registered against teachers on complaints of students committing suicide after being reprimanded/punished by teachers.
Justice N Kirubakaran gave the direction while hearing a petition filed by John Kennedy, Principal of St Thomas Higher Secondary School, Nadukaveri, Thanjavur district, seeking to quash a case proceedings against him in Judicial Magistrate Court at Tiruvaiyaru regarding the suicide of one of his students for scolding him.
The petitioner allegedly scolded him for scoring poor marks in examinations.
The student committed suicide on March seven, 2012 for allegedly being scolded for securing low marks in the examinations. The case was registered on a complaint given by the father of the student.

The petitioner said police registered a case against him under IPC Sec 306 (abetment of suicide) and later a charge-sheet under Sec IPc 305 (abetting suicide by person below 18 years committing suicide).
The petitioner submitted that there was no motive for the alleged occurrence.
He contended that every teacher and headmaster is a well wisher of his/her students. The teachers were strict towards their students for welfare of their future. If this type of cases are allowed, it will create fear in the minds of the teacher community.
He also sought to stay the proceeding of the case in the Judicial Magistrate Court and also dispense his personal appearance in the court.
