Heavy rains cause havoc in DK, Udupi districts

Heavy rains lashing the coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi in the last two days have caused widespread damage to houses and propertyin the region.
Several houses and roads were destroyed in the rains in DK and the water levels in the rivers Nethravati, Phalguni and Kumaradhara were rising steadily, official sources said.
No casualties had been reported so far.
The DK district had received an average rainfall of 90 mm in the last two days, with the heaviest rainfall of 110.7 mm recorded in Belthangady taluk.
Maximum temperatures also saw a dip with Panambur weather observatory recording 25.1 degree Celsius, which was five degrees less than the average maximum temperature recorded in June in the region.
A portion of the main road at Kenjaru leading to Mangaluru International Airport was partially damaged.
A totalof 13 shops had to be closed on the Falguni road when water entered the shops from the roads.
Power supply was disrupted in several areas in Udupi.
A huge mango tree was uprooted in strong winds yesterdaydamaging a building and a shop.
Large cracks have appeared on national highway 66 stretch at Maravanthe near Kundapur in the district due to incessant rainfall.
Equipment and materials connected with a bridge under construction across River Swarna in Udupi connecting Manipal via Kolalagiri, were washed away in heavy rains last night causing an estimated loss of around Rs 20 lakh.
