Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday conducted an aerial survey of flood-hit areas in Satara, Sangli and Kolhapur districts in Maharashtra before heading towards Karnataka, an official said.

The home minister is supposed to assess the flood situation in Belagavi district in the neighbouring state.

Shah was briefed by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis in the morning about the current flood situation and the measures undertaken in the southern regions of Western Maharashtra.

"We have been sending a daily dossier on the flood relief measures and coordination among various rescue teams to the Union Home ministry," said an official from the Chief Minister's Office (CMO).

Unprecedented floods were triggered by the release of a large amount of water from various dams coupled with heavy rains in Kolhapur and Sangli districts.

Districts of Pune, Satara and Solapur were also left swamped by floods. The death toll due to floods stood at 40.

A total of 3.78 lakh people had been evacuated from the worst-hit Kolhapur and Sangli districts.

The Karnataka government on Saturday declared 80 taluks in 17 districts flood affected even as the death toll rose to 26 and thousands of people were rendered homeless.
