Newly-appointed Vice Chancellor of Calcutta University, Sugata Marjit, today said he was "very hopeful" about restoring normalcy at the varsity within one month.
"I am very hopeful that within one month, normalcy will be restored on our university campus," Marjit told reporters today after formally taking over as the new VC.
Stating that a new person "always holds the advantage because he starts with a clean slate", he said, "I dislike strikes, demonstrations and posters. I can take steps slowly and I can explain why, if I am unable to do a certain task... I can sit for discussions.
"Even I can convey what I can actually do. But if I am not at all performing and if I am not transparent, then that is a problem."
Marjit, a well-known scholar and researcher on industrial economics, takes over from Suranjan Das, who was transferred to Jadavpur University as its new VC.
The new CU VC, however, was very critical of the row over teaching and non-teaching staff members who were allegedly assaulted by a few students backed by the Trinamool Congress Chharta Parishad.
Stressing that a varsity should be an autonomous body, Marjit, however, noted that as the government provides funds to such institutions, it has some responsibilities in case of a financial scam.
"I 100 per cent believe that the autonomy of the university is very important. But if there is any financial irregularity, the state government has some responsibilities because it is providing funds to it.
"However, at the same time, I believe that the problems of the university must be resolved by it alone," he said.
