Haryana government today said it is considering to make it mandatory to add important nutrients in wheat flour to tackle malnutrition in the state.
The Health Minister Anil Vij said just as iodine was important to be mixed in salt, mixing of vital vitamins and minerals would be made essential in wheat flour.
"A new law is being considered which will make it mandatory to add important nutrients in wheat flour to tackle malnutrition in the state," he said here in a statement.
He said that fortification of wheat (essential mix of multi vitamins) is being made mandatory for all wheat producing companies.
The minister said a number of women and children in the state are suffering from malnutrition.
"This disease needs to be fully eliminated so as to ensure the birth of healthy child as newborn could only be healthy if born to a healthy mother and not to the one who is already suffering from malnutrition," he said.
Vij said under this new law under formation, mixing of B-Complex, folic acid, iron and essential minerals in flour would be made mandatory.
He said that in this regards directions have been issued to senior officers of the department to find out states where the law is already in force.
