The Haryana government has decided to carry out a campaign from April 18 to May 5 across the state to generate awareness among people about sanitation, state Urban Local Bodies Minister Kavita Jain said here today.

She said the 'Shahari Swaraj Abhiyan' would be launched by ministers, MPs, MLAs, mayors, deputy commissioners and prominent personalities in all districts of the state on April 18.

The decision was taken in a meeting of Urban Local Bodies Department held under the chairmanship of Jain.

She said that sensitisation drives would be carried out in parks, schools, colleges and Residents Welfare Associations (RWAs) on segregation of waste and significance in waste management.

Besides this, the day would be observed as Plastic-Free Day and city-level entrepreneurs, and manufacturers would be felicitated for making innovative decentralised composting equipment, the minister said.

On April 20, the focus of the campaign would be on 'reduce, reuse and recycle', during which interactive sessions of experts would be organised.

She said on April 21, municipal workers, including outsourced and contractual staff would be honoured for their work, and ideas would be sought from them for improving cleanliness. The best idea would be implemented during the month.

Health check-up camps for sanitation workers would also be conducted on that day, Jain said, adding on April 30 and May 1, Open Defecation Free drive would be conducted.
