The moderate Hurriyat Conference today asked the leadership of both India and Pakistan to start a meaningful dialogue process to resolve the Kashmir issue.
"Kashmir is the main cause of border tension between the two nuclear powers. Tension is not beneficial for the dialogue process," the amalgam said in a statement here.
"Therefore, the leadership of both the countries should demonstrate political maturity and farsightedness and initiate a meaningful dialogue to resolve outstanding issues," it said.
"Dialogue, discussions and mediations are accepted political principles and these are necessary for solving disputes," the statement said.
On External Affairs minister Salman Khurshid's recent statement that Kashmir was a bilateral matter, the Hurriyat said "his remarks are from historical reality."
"Bilateral dialogue between the two countries on Kashmir failed in the past due to non-involvement of Kashmiris who are real masters of their destiny," it said.
The amalgam welcomed Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's demand for US intervention in resolving the issue.
