Chairman of hardline Hurriyat Conference today wrote to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, seeking his intervention to ensure safety of Pakistani and Kashmiri prisoners lodged in different jails across the country.
"I...Call your attention to security and safety measures adopted for the prisoners. As custodian of law and justice, we deem it as your moral and ethical duty to take all possible safety measures for these prisoners," Geelani said in the letter.
Geelani in the letter, copy of which was released to media here, termed the killing of Sarabjit Singh in Kot Lakhpat jail in Pakistan and murderous assault on Pakistani prisoner Sanaullah in Kot Balwal jail in Jammu as "unfortunate" and said, the incidents had an adverse effect and a wave of anxiety has grabbed the people of both countries.
Geelani called for treating prisoners according to international charter and sought the release of those who have completed their jail terms.
The Hurriyat chairman also appealed to Pakistan to take necessary safety measures for Indian prisoners and to avoid recurrence of incidents like that of Sarabjit.
"We appeal to both India and Pakistan to take measures for the safety of detainees in their respective countries and in order to avoid recurrence of such unfortunate incidents.
"You need to check all loopholes, otherwise both countries will have to share responsibility for the negative impact," Geelani added.
