Husband, in-laws acquitted in dowry death case

A man, along with his four family members, has been acquitted by a Delhi court of the charges of cruelly treating his wife for dowry leading to her death which was described by the judge as "accidental".
Additional Sessions Judge Rajesh Kumar Goel absolved north-west Delhi residents Vijay Kumar, husband of Pooja, his parents and two brothers, who were charged with offences of subjecting the woman to cruelty (section 498A) and dowry death (section 304B) of the IPC.
"There are general allegations of demand for dowry. It has not been explained as to who, when and what article of property was demanded by the accused persons," the judge said while freeing the in-laws of Pooja who died after suffering 80 per cent burn injuries.

According to the police, a complaint against Kumar and his family was lodged by Pooja's mother alleging that on November 3, 2007, Pooja was taken to a hospital by her neighbours after she got burnt in her matrimonial house.
Pooja had married Kumar in 2005 and the couple had two daughters.
The victim's mother told the police that a day prior to the incident, Pooja and her husband had visited her and demanded money to buy a motorcycle for Kumar, the prosecution said, adding she paid Rs 20,000 for it.
