Averting a major tragedy, police discovered and defused an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) planted by Maoists under a bridge in Maharashtra's Gadchiroli district on Wednesday, a senior official said.

The bomb was found under a bridge at Made Amgaon on Made Amgaon-Ghot road in Chamorshi tehsil during a road clearance operation, he said.

"It weighed 25 kg and could have damaged police patrolling vehicles. Our teams often used this road," said Shailesh Balkawade, Gadchiroli Superintendent of Police.

The road also witnesses a lot of ordinary traffic, he added.

On May 1 this year, 15 commandos of C-60 team of Gadchiroli Police were killed alongwith the civilian driver when naxals blew up their vehicle at Jamburkheda in the district.
