The two parties signed a Memorandum of Understanding to create a jointly supervised IIT Bombay-CNRS PhD fellowship scheme starting July 2016, a statement here said.
It is intended to increase the Indo-French scientific collaboration including cross-cooperation between laboratories and research and development for industrial applications, it said.
Under the scheme, students will have a PhD supervisor in India and a co-supervisor in France and can work in fields such as advanced electronics and electromagnetics or complex system engineering.
IIT-Bombay director Devang Khakhar said the partnership will ensure that institute's top students get access to French technologies and advanced industrial environments to carry out research.
Thales already has joint projects with 50 universities worldwide.
